About this deal

In conclusion, this is a very strange book. There are an incredible number of really good things in it, but there is too much unnecessary detail for very young children and a conclusion that will not satisfy most adult readers. Therefore it falls into a category where it does not really satisfy any target audience, which is a shame because I love Alan Garner’s work. It took Garner six years to write his next novel, Red Shift. [23] The book centres on three intertwined love stories, one set in the present, another during the English Civil War, and the third in the second century CE. [24] Philip referred to it as "a complex book but not a complicated one: the bare lines of story and emotion stand clear". [24] Our Elves Are Different: The lios-alfar, who are drawn from Welsh mythology and whose society is organised along pre-conquest Welsh lines.

Garner provides a sidelight on his authorial approach by including an appendix of books which inspired him, along with a brief discussion of his approach to mythology. Selina Place – A local woman, who is revealed to be a shape-shifting witch, indeed the leader of the morthbrood, a secret network of people involved in dark magic. Also known as The Morrigan, the ancient name of an Irish battle and death goddess, she is in league with powerful forces of darkness. The Svart-Alfar, although the name actually means 'dark elves' (but the Norse version from whom they take their name are more like goblins).

Hans Christian Andersen Awards". International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). Retrieved 29 July 2013. Whew. I'm out of breath just writing it all down. The book would have to have been twice as long to have any hope of pulling all of this together in a coherent form, and even then I'm not sure it would have been possible. It's not a bad book, just not nearly the book it could have been with a little discipline applied to it. The Moon of Gomrath is not only powerful but full of wild, whirling adventure...the reader is drawn right into the midst of it all’. Guardian

However "Moon" is not quite as strong a book as it's predecessor - but given the strength of "Weirdstone" that would be a struggle. Taken on it's own merits, however, it is a very strong book. Garner pays particular attention to language, and strives to render the cadence of the Cheshire tongue in modern English. This he explains by the sense of anger he felt on reading Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: the footnotes would not have been needed by his father.

Philip offered the opinion that the "essence of his work" was "the struggle to render the complex in simple, bare terms; to couch the abstract in the concrete and communicate it directly to the reader". [27] He added that Garner's work is "intensely autobiographical, in both obvious and subtle ways". [27] Highlighting Garner's use of mythological and folkloric sources, Philip stated that his work explores "the disjointed and troubled psychological and emotional landscape of the twentieth century through the symbolism of myth and folklore." [35] He also expressed the opinion that "Time is Garner's most consistent theme". [24] Garner and Don Webb adapted Elidor as a BBC children's television series shown in 1995, comprising six half-hour episodes, starring Damian Zuk as Roland and Suzanne Shaw as Helen. [56] [57] and do you know: Librarians don't pay fines on overdue books! Can you imagine! Even if someone is waiting patiently for it! Published in 1963, this was the sequel to The Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner and directly continues the story.
