Chris Curry, Sinclair’s friend and one-time employee, explained some years later that the batteries had leaked — not exploded — in an Executive belonging to one Lord Rothschild, a British aristocrat. Niniejsza książka nie opowiada tylko o niezwykłych znakach interpunkcyjnych ani nawet o interpunkcji w ogóle.

Most of the samples (reproduced in her book) show poorly "typeset" documents (obviously prepared using the primitive word processing programs of the era by people who had no training in typography). Houston has a nice way with words and seems to know his material; in that old phrase, he does wear his learning lightly, and goes from ancient greece to digitized manuscripts held by the british Library. While the story itself is self-contained, it’s easy to see how the world of Shady Hollow and its denizens deserve to be expanded, explored, and even revisited time and again. This meant the calculator could run on tiny coin-shaped cells rather than the bulky cylindrical batteries of its competitors. Lastly, one character tries to save another character in danger, but the help comes too late and someone falls to their death off-page. I’m counting down to Christmas by way of a collection of beautiful, clever, important, and/or outright odd calculators and calculating devices.

The first chapter ranges through the beginnings of Greek and Roman writing, the spread of Christianity in Europe, monastic manuscript copying, and the rise of modern typography. It seems like an open-and-shut case, but dogged reporter Vera Vixen doesn’t believe gentle Joe is a killer.
