There’s something refreshing about listening to a pop band that isn’t trying to conform with what is charting well and just doing what they want. They also get a little bit more autobiographical than we’ve heard before such as on early stand out What Happened to Your Band, which charts the band’s initial split. Capturing the band’s larger-than-life personalities, the album cover was conceptualised and shot by Rankin, who also directed the video for ‘Nineties’.

Each track’s a nod to the past, with comfortingly familiar riffs and hooks, whilst lyrics reflect on what could’ve been as the band long for the old days.Ahead of the album release Busted teased fans with the release of tracks Nineties, Reunion, All My Friends and Radio but the first official single, Radio, didn’t arrive until last month. I think busted must have long had a level of self awareness that their music operates in this way though.

Although annoying it’s the gimmick of this song that kinda saves it, in the ‘so trite you can laugh a lot about it’ way. Again I find it hard to tell if I’m enjoying it, i’m sneering at it a lot but also smiling so I guess I’m enjoying myself. They spent a year working on it and the result is a rush of melody and effervescent riffs as they blend huge arena-filling choruses with a classic pop-punk sound. With the talk that Charlie's been writing some Fightstar material recently, I'm hoping that next year, Busted will take a break to allow him to focus on that.Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). To the album’s credit, it kept someone as cynical and bitter as me through to the end without cursing at it for being obnoxious, and that says a little bit about the talent handling this record. Going straight from Atlantis to Mars ‘race to mars’ changes the vibe a lot and is a really really weird song. Busted have grown up, that is for sure – however, the band haven’t forgot what made them relevant and ultimately, popular. Yes, at times, the album does feel dated – a drawback of an album based on nostalgia – and yes, it can be difficult to determine where the group fits into the modern musical landscape, but Half Way There is so uniquely Busted that it doesn’t really matter.

All my friends’ is another weird one, both optimistic but sneering and doesn’t reflect really well on any of the singers.Again, Radio probably does the most right here, with a stable, breathing guitar reminiscent of Green Day’s ballads where Charlie Simpson’s more brash, unpolished vocals are allowed to project some greater emotionality, something that would benefit this album a lot more if that was a more regular occurrence, rather than James Bourne and Matt Willis desperately trying to replicate the nasal goofiness of turn-of-the-millennium pop-punk that, in all honesty, hasn’t aged the most gracefully.
