My own favorite tracks are the "Aerospace inferno" with nice pulsing rhythm and creation of moods, a really well rocking "Ejection" which was later also played by Hawkwind on stage, and definitely the end hymn "Catch a Falling Starfighter", which I found very touching conclusion. The music's ok in a generic Hawkish way and its a potentially interesting subject - did the US knowingly offload the potentially lethal (to the pilot) Starfighter jet on Germany - but the sub Monty Python "Ve haff vays of making you talk!

The vinyl release of Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters includes a 4 booklet with extensive liner notes. Ejection" (coupled with "Catch a Falling Starfighter") was released as a single, although both songs are slightly different versions to those on the album. If anyone had told me that a long time favourite of mine would be a concept album that takes the WW2 era Lockheed Starfighter Jet as its theme, I'd have thought them crackers. And co-joined by Paul Rudolph (on 6 string and bass guitar), Twink, Arthur Brown, Adrian Wagner, Brian Eno, Vivian Stanshall and Jim Capaldi the result was a virtual Hawkwind EP peppered by spoken word skits and a two part Arthur Brown-tormenter, “The Song of The Gremlin.Hawkwind has incorporated some of the songs in their live set through the years including "The Right Stuff", "Ejection", "The Widow Maker" and "The Song of the Gremlin" and they have also been recorded and included on several of their live albums and compilations. In the end, one of the more mentally anguished and drug addled albums I have ever heard - and rock n roll on par with Hawkwind where it appears. variant ("G for Germany") kept crashing in flames in droves killing young German pilots in the process! I first bought this album as an LP in the 1970's and played it to death, so naturally I cannot recommend it enough.

I think this realistic theme is interesting subject for contrast of more abstract cosmic operas, though Hawkwind also has had political themes on their agenda. With more tracks, most of Hawkwind, (including Dave Brock and Lemmy), along with Roxy Music's Brian Eno, Pink Fairies Twink et al as musicians, the god of hellfire, Arthur Brown singing one track, and the Bonzo Dog's Viv Stanshall as an actor / character within the dialogue, what more can a fan want? Apart from Brian Eno on synth, the other musicians are all pretty much Hawkwind members, even Dave Brock plays lead guitar on one track.

It doesn't matter what track I choose they are all fabulous, from the outright Spacerock of Biometrics to the simplicity of Journey, where else can you hear past members of Hawkwind mixed in with various, sometimes unexpected guests (even if a few of them are dead), doing what they do best, making great albums. Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters is the solo debut by Robert Calvert, the former singer of the space-rock band Hawkwind.
