Description

This number one sunday times bestseller, encourages us to question every diet plan, official recommendation, miracle cure or food label we encounter, and rethink our whole relationship with food. You can read specific chapters based on your interests or time availability, without having to go through the entire book. It contains so much information that it’s impossible to process by reading it from start to finish, but bullet-pointed tips at the end of each chapter and an appendix of food tables make it a valuable reference book to keep on a kitchen shelf. For further information about your statutory rights, contact your local authority Trading Standards department or consumer advice center (for example the Citizen's Advice Bureau if you are in the UK).

Tim Spector has pioneered a science-based approach to nutrition, encouraging us to forget misleading notions of calorie counts or nutritional breakdowns. He’s very open about the limitations of current knowledge and the often poor quality of studies on the subject, so I’m sure there’ll be an updated version in a few years - for now though, I’d highly recommend this if you want to know more about the food you’re eating.Little or no evidence suggesting eating quality meat in moderation is a health risk but that processed meat products are definitely bad for health. Replacing sugar, salt, fat and gluten with weird and untested chemicals is usually pointless and probably dangerous, and the 1980s advice to change butter and cream for margarines and vegetable oils was “one of the biggest health scandals ever”. Empowering and practical, Food for Life is nothing less than a new approach to how to eat - for our health and the health of the planet.

Occasionally there will be mentions of his ZOE PREDICT study (which after reading the book I am still not entirely clear on the premise of the study or what "ideal" results might look like) and how his own results have influenced his personal food choices, which is great for him but I am not clear on how those same foods would or should influence my own choices as my body might react differently (I am a woman in my 40's not, like him, a man in my 60's: we have vastly different nutritional needs). I'm always interested in what Tim Spector has to say, he's evidence based, balanced and not afraid to say when we've been wrong about health assumptions.Empowering, practical, wide-ranging and filled with intriguing insights, Food for Life is nothing less than a new approach to how to eat - for our health and the health of the planet.
