I suppose it’s ironic that I read this on my Kindle, since the emphasis is very much on reading real books - mostly second-hand, previously loved, with the different smells and feelings associated with different styles of book.

Set during the dark days of Covid shutdowns and isolation, this chronicles how a myriad of ordinary people struggled through all of the challenges. I rarely get emotional reading but this book is so beautifully poignant and touching, speaking if a time when the world stopped, how we all feared how it would end and did the best we could for ourselves and those we love, a gentle hug of a story. I also really enjoyed the use of letters within the narrative, finding that they pulled me into the individual stories and I was completely invested in even the most minor of characters. It made me laugh, it made me cry and left me with a feeling of community spirit - I will definitely be recommending this to others, it is a fantastic read' ?

By the way, you can find many book recommendations that will keep me going after I manage to pull myself out of this enchanting world. I also liked the times when the author directly addressed the reader, telling us that it is okay not to love the book that everyone else is raving about, and that it’s okay to give up on a book which we are not enjoying, that reading should be a pleasure and not a chore.

Of course, this is the pandemic- we meet people who are struggling with COVID, with isolation, with abuse. A cosy story about the joy of stories, not only the books that are recommended for people who ask but the lives of the different people who receive them. I loved this book, I really enjoyed the interwoven stories ranging from books and pandemics to escaping previous lives and relationships. All in all, I enjoyed the book and look forward to exploring the reading suggestions at the back of the book.

I adored this novel but I cautiously recommend it, as I am aware that the Covid-19 pandemic is ongoing and a novel about it may be triggering for some people. However, it was a joy to read and I love the idea of a book pharmacy and even reading this book will give you lots more to add your “to read lists”. I started writing a very long review of this but accidentally lost it which is probably for the best as I sort of feel that if you can’t say anything nice you shouldn’t say anything at all. Also in Jersey, although we had a lockdown and restrictions in 2020, and then small ones again later on, it was nothing like what the UK experienced.
