Jo-Jo is a cold, calculating and intelligent man who plays the ‘stupid servant’ role beautifully so he can stay at Craggy-Tops without anyone suspecting he is up to anything.

I agree with both opinions; while her utter devotion to Jack is sweet, I think I'd be a bit irritated by her if I were Philip or Dinah. The Castle of Adventure was earlier dramatised by TVS for ITV in 1990, and the series has been Blyton's most used on the BBC; in 1974 The Island of Adventure was told on Jackanory [1] while in 1986 The Circus of Adventure followed.

Corners/edges rubbed, light readers creases to spine, pages slightly browned, no writing or scribble, else in Very Good Condition. They can see the sinister Isle of Gloom from their window, covered in mist and harbouring strange secrets. The house is owned by Phillip and Dinah's uncle Jocelyn (a focused historian) and overworked aunt Polly, who are helped by a handyman named Jo-Jo (Joe in some versions). Jack doesn't seem to mind at all that his younger sister Lucy-Ann tags along with him wherever he goes, and he's generally quiet by nature. This gorgeous edition of the classic adventure features an iconic retro cover adapted from the original cover artwork by Stuart Tresilian.

When he reveals himself at the end, he drops the dumb talk he’s been using before and speaks the Queens English. One last thing — Mrs Mannering's first ever words to her future husband, Bill, are rather amusing from an adult perspective. When the four go looking for eagles, they find that the castle isn't as abandoned as they were led to believe. A lovely, unadulterated copy (no text changes unlike later editions to make the story more "PC" Beige boards, illustrated front board, spine and throughout.

It could be argued, probably correctly, that the more authentic and mature thing to have done would have been to have left Joe as Jo-jo, left him as black, and left him as the villain, but simply de-fetishised and modernised his depiction. But when Micky, Philip's new monkey, breaks his birthday present, all the children are plunged into an exciting quest to find the lost treasure of the Andra with some ruthless villains hot on their trail.Jack Trent: A boy about Philip's age, who has red hair, green eyes and many freckles on his face, the latter of which earning him the nickname "Freckles" from Philip. Probably the most notable henchman was Ray Uma's henchman, Taj, in "The River of Adventure", who appeared to be more intelligent than his master, and had a major role in the episode's plot. Three of the children get locked up in a cave (Jack’s not caught only because he is following Kiki who flew away down a passage). Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack are determined to explore the mountain and uncover its secret, but first they must escape from a pack of ravenous wolves and a mad genius who plans to rule the world! Despite this inevitable feeling of a different era, it has a few universal truths that are often missing from more contemporary and I might say violent works.
