Description

Carr was passionately committed to the preservation of old churches, as Byron Rogers recounts in The Last Englishman: The Life of J. Over forty years later, after his novel The Harpole Report was a critical and popular success, he was invited to give a talk at Goldsmiths'. Carr's great art is to make it clear that joy is inseparable from the pain and oblivion which unmake it. It also perfectly captures the ephemeral nature of time – the idea that our lives can turn on the tiniest of moments, the most fleeting of chances to be grasped before they are lost forever.

One last caveat for anyone that may need it: this novel has a romantic sub-plot, but this is not Madame Bovary--take this however you want, for me it was another feature that I am grateful for, but I know some people will get disappointed because of that. Along with the `The Remains of The Day', `Birdsong' I know I shall be recommending others to read this for the rest of my life. Many of the incidents in the novel are based on real events in Carr's own life, and some of the characters are modelled on his family. The constancy of Sunday worship, Chapel or Church; the tradition of food served to a family and guests sitting dutifully together, heads bowed, saying Grace. In the war’s aftermath, Birkin’s life has collapsed, and he has been left with deep emotional wounds. To compensate for the lack of budget, a very tight shooting schedule was planned over 28 days, during which Kenneth Branagh was only available for two weeks and was on the stage nightly in London.

Set in small Yorkshire village in the heady summer of 1920, Carr’s novella is narrated by Tom Birkin, a young man still dealing with the effects of shell-shock following the traumas of the First World War.

Next time you have an afternoon or, better yet, a day that stretches before you tempting you to read a book in one sitting, pick up “ A Month in The Country” by J. Moon is employed in the village under the same bequest, working to uncover a mysterious lost grave, but is more interested in discovering the remains of an earlier Saxon church building in the field next to the churchyard.
