Where children pronounce the phonemes incorrectly or use letter names, they will not be able to successfully blend to read words. Big Cat for Little Wandle Fluency is a range of chapter books with increasing word counts across 10 fluency levels aimed at children in Years 2 and 3. I think a lot of the Little Wandle books are just the old Big Cat books slotted into the new system. The first 5 weeks recap Phase 5 Phonics, the next 5 weeks teach bridging to spelling and the last 20 weeks are based around spelling. Reading skills are taught discretely five times a week in 30-minute sessions for all pupils in both KS1 and KS2.

For Year 1 children, this is when they read the final fluency assessment at 60–70+ words per minute. This progression is based on the DfE’s publication ‘Letters and Sounds: Improving Rates of Progress 2021’. Interestingly, we’ve just had a book home that is “not decodable at any point using Little Wandle” according to this spreadsheet, but the book is branded as Phase 4 Little Wandle! If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. There will be an exciting mix of stories and non-fiction to foster a love of reading in all children. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Teachers will ensure children have a balance of skills across the week and over each term so that they have opportunities to develop their complete reading skills.

This is why we teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. If one of them is stuck for an idea, the other usually comes up with something or makes a cup of tea. Introduction and engagement - The teacher will explain to the children what they will be learning today and get them enthusiastic and motivated for the session.

Little Wandle is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme, which provides high quality planning and resources for the teaching staff.

Each class in KS2 has a class reading book which allows teachers share their own love of reading with their pupils. Ensuring our approach to teaching phonics and reading is accessible to all learners, regardless of background.

Each book also contains parent’s notes and a ‘retell the story’ activity to support children’s comprehension and vocabulary skills. Pupils read in all subjects in the curriculum and will read different genres to develop their understanding about a topic. Her first children's book A Medal for Malina was published in 1990, and since then Narinder has written hundreds of stories for different age groups.
