Soon, in my own home, where I raised my daughter, I’ll have to apologize to that girl for goodness-knows-what… She’s a viper. Otavio made her into something that wasn’t her but himself and which Joana received out of pity for both, because both were incapable of freeing themselves through love, because she had meekly accepted her own fear of suffering, her inability to move beyond the frontier of revolt. In the book, she cites long passages from Spinoza, the longest quotes that appear anywhere in her novels; it seems that she felt an affinity with the Dutch philosopher's amoral conception of the world. Clarice Lispector's first novel, Near to the Wild Heart, was published in 1944, when its author was only nineteen years old.

It sounds crazy, but it’s as if she were watching me… reading my thoughts… Sometimes I’ll be laughing and I stop short, cold. This is my first Lispector book, but I already know I will be intimately familiar with all of her writing.

The book, particularly its revolutionary language, brought its young, unknown creator to great prominence in Brazilian letters and earned her the prestigious Graça Aranha Prize. I don’t know for sure as I’m not familiar with the earlier versions, but I get the impression that Entrekin’s translations are closer to Lispector’s original text. Many felt she had given Brazillian literature a unique voice in the larger context of Portuguese literature. I have never read her yet, I’ve always had the impression they’d be over my head intellectually, although you do make this one sound rather accessible, at least until the end!

Only images, flashes and snatches, and self-exploration to finally make her decision, to be triumphantly reborn. When her father dies she is forced to live with an aunt and uncle who can’t seem to connect with their free-spirited niece so they send her off to a boarding school. Reading the quotations, I kept thinking of Anna Kavan’s Ice, another stream-of-consciousness novel about a woman’s isolation and fragmentation. She was born in the Ukraine in 1920, but in the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Civil War, the family fled to Romania and eventually Brazil. Neuware - Clarice Lispector's sensational, prize-winning debut novel Near to the Wild Heart was published when she was just twenty-three and earned her the name 'Hurricane Clarice'. She floats through daytime as if it was a little bit of dream mixed with reality, and inhabits the night as if darkness were something concrete, the dense, dark night was cut down the middle, split into two black blocks of sleep.
