Glenfiddich means "valley of the deer" in Gaelic. The Glenfiddich distillery was founded in 1886 by William Grant. For my tastes Glenfiddich really hits its prime between 14-18 years and in the rare occasions you can get it at cask strength in that age range it’s stunning. I’ve harped on the 40% thing a lot lately while tasting through a bunch of Glenfiddich, but that’s because I know what Glenfiddich can taste like when it’s not neutered. Expressions like this Glenfiddich 21 just don’t do this lovely spirit justice. A 1990s bottling of Glenfiddich Classic. That’s a great question Martin, it’s hard to say when you have those things in your head. Not sure how much the rum cask adds there is some sweetness but you tend to get this from Glenfiddich anyway and it’s more bourbon-like than rum-like. Sweet initially, then the tannin drops in. I don't typically equate Glenfiddich spirit with big tannins, but this 21yr Gran Reserva has quite a bit going on. Bitter oak, tobacco, sweet cream, caramel, cocoa, pecan and a touch of brown sugar. No ethanol, not super bold, but plenty complex. Having let it sit there for five months with (I suppose) different ambient temperatures to wherever it came from, it was as described and was very smooth - like drinking mineral water would be the mot juste - and a great celebratory day for all concerned.Whiskybase B.V.
